Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation.
HCG is used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women, and to increase sperm count in men. HCG is also used in young boys when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum normally. This can be caused by a pituitary gland disorder.
HCG may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
In high doses hCG is a popular adjunct in fertility treatment.In the pregnant female, hCG is naturally produced in great amounts - we're talking up to 300,000 IU at any given time several weeks into a pregnancy. The hormone causes cells in the uterine lining to produce progesterone until the placenta grows and produces progesterone on it's own. It is progesterone which supports a healthy pregnancy, but levels of hCG are important as it is tied in with the body's ability to support pregnancy from conception to full term.
