Tantalum is one of the most chemically stable metals at temperatures below 150 ° C. Only react with tantalum fluoride, hydrofluoric acid, acidic solution containing fluoride ions and sulfur trioxide. Reacts with concentrated alkali solution at room temperature and dissolves in the molten alkali. Tight tantalum began to slightly oxidize at 200 ℃ and obviously oxidize at 280 ℃. Tantalum has many oxides, the most stable is tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5). Tantalum
and hydrogen generate brittle solid solutions and metal hydrides such
as Ta2H, TaH, TaH2 and TaH3 at temperatures above 250 ° C. At 800 ~ 1200 ℃ under vacuum, hydrogen from tantalum precipitation of tantalum and restore plasticity. Tantalum
and nitrogen begin to react at about 300 ° C to form solid solutions
and nitrogen compounds; at temperatures above 2000 ° C and under high
vacuum, absorbed nitrogen is precipitated from tantalum. Tantalum
and carbon exist in three phases above 2800 ° C: tantalum carbide solid
solutions, low-cost carbides, and high-cost carbides. Tantalum can react with fluorine at room temperature and can react with other halogens when it is above 250 ° C to form halides.
