Avantages:
Extremely high wear resistance.

Availability:
Limited.

Application:
Used in specialized applications such as draw dies, forming rolls, powder metal tooling and lamination dies.

Machinability:
Altough readily machinable in the annealed condition D3 has a lower rating than most other tool steels. It is rated at 45% of a 1% carbon tool steel. D3 has a low grindability rating.

Annealing:
D3 should be surface protected during annealing and slowly heated to 1600to 1650F. Hold at temperature for one hour per inch of thickness. Furnace cool to 1000F, and then cool in still air.
