[Pharmacology]
Erythropoietin is a glycoprotein which is produced in kidney. It stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of committed erythroid progenitors in the bone marrow. Epoetin alfa which is manufactured by recombinant DNA technology has the same biological effects as endogenous erythropoietin. Pharmodynamics test indicates that Epoetin alfa has significant therapeutic effects on anemia associated with renal dysfunction by increasing colony forming unit of erythroid progenitors (CFU-E).
[Indication]
Anemia associated with renal failure, including both patients on dialysis and patients not on dialysis.
